Pre-Prep step back in time at Cogges Manor Farm

On Tuesday, our Pre-Prep children visited Cogges Manor Farm, where they travelled back in time to the Victorian Era.

Starting in the old farmhouse kitchen, the children explored the traditional cast-iron kettle, oven range and stove, and discovered why cast-iron was particularly useful – it holds and retains heat. They then became Victorian bakers and made Welsh cakes for afternoon tea. Whilst baking, the children learnt all about where Victorian families would get their ingredients from – those bought at the market and those they could grow or make themselves on the farm, such as butter and honey.

Before lunch, there was time to explore the house, with its wonderfully winding stairs leading up to the bedrooms – chamber pots included! Next, it was off to the laundry room, where the children discovered just how much hard work went into getting clothes clean and fresh. From grating carbolic soap before adding it to the dolly tub, plunging the clothes with a posser, and finally using a mangle to squeeze every last drop of water out, they certainly built up an appetite for lunch!

In the afternoon, the children learnt about how crops were grown on the farm and discovered what barley, oats and wheat could be turned into.

Of course, the children couldn't leave the farm without saying hello to the animals. They saw Shetland ponies, turkeys, guinea pigs, ducks, sheep, chickens and Pygmy goats!

It was such a delightful day of learning and a wonderful opportunity to appreciate just how much life has changed over the last 100 years.
