Congratulations to Cathedral Chorister, Alexander Winnifrith, who recently won a place in the National Children’s Orchestra (NCO) following a very competitive audition process.

The full-size symphony orchestra draws instrumentalists together from across the UK. Alexander, 12, who lives in Oxford, is excited about participating in the workshops and concerts with the NCO. “It is so prestigious and I will be performing at a high level,” he said. “There will be people who are the same standard as me or better which is a good challenge.”

Ms Sophie Biddell, Director of Music at Christ Church Cathedral School, said: “The award of a place in the NCO is an exceptional achievement which recognises Alexander’s talent as well as his incredibly hard work.”

Alexander, who has a place at Winchester College subject to Common Entrance or an Academic Scholarship, is taking his Grade 7 Trumpet exam shortly. Until now he has played a beginner’s trumpet but this Christmas he was given a silver-plated Bach Strad, a perfect way to celebrate his NCO success.

On Saturday 2nd February Alexander will be singing a solo in the Oxford Orpheus concert in Oxford Town Hall. Tickets are available at
