"Uplifiting music... permeates and enriches every aspect of life for the whole community" - ISI Report 2017
Our School was founded to educate choristers, and music remains at its very heart. One cannot set foot in the School without hearing music, and there are pianos in every room. Music is something which our pupils love; every week there are as many individual music lessons as there are boys and we offer a very wide range of instruments, including piano, organ, violin, viola, cello, double bass, harp, flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon, trumpet, trombone, French horn, euphonium and tuba.
Pupils frequently gain high grades in music exams and in recent years we have obtained a number of grade 8s, many with Distinction. Each year our leavers win a large number of Music scholarships to leading independent schools.
Our premier choir, Christ Church Cathedral Choir, is internationally renowned while our choir for day boys, which sings twice a week in Worcester College Chapel, is considered to be one of the best college choirs in Oxford. Every morning the whole school sings together and it is always inspiring to hear the enthusiasm and musicality of the school in song.
There are many concerts both formal and informal, including the annual House Music Competition, held in St Peter's College Chapel, in which our three houses, Sayers, Carroll and Wolsey, compete enthusiastically; for our choirs there is a busy programme of tours, broadcasts and recordings.
Through music our pupils learn to communicate, to be confident, to develop their initiative and to work as a team, and CCCS boys take the myriad benefits of a musical education with them throughout their lives.
