Old Boys’ Annual Cricket Match and Farewell to Dr Stephen Darlington

Posted on 8th Jul, 2018

On the 7th July over 60 Old Boys and other members of the CCCS Community returned to Merton Field for their annual Old Boys’ Cricket Match & Picnic Lunch.

This year’s event was also the Old Boys’ formal farewell to the retiring Christ Church Cathedral Choir’s Director, Dr Stephen Darlington, who was leaving his post after 33 years of service, and who was a special guest at the event.

As well as Dr Darlington, the School’s OBA Chairman, Mr Gordon Hughes (1953 -1959), was retiring from his post, which he held for the past 9 years.

In his speech, the Headmaster, Mr Richard Murray, thanked Mr Hughes for all of his support and commitment over the years and highlighted the importance of the Old Boys’ Association’s involvement in the life of the School.

Guests were also treated to speeches by Dr Darlington, who spoke about his memories of the Old Boy Choristers from his era and reminded those present of some of the stories from their time at the School; and by Mr Hughes, who officially handed over the Association Chairmanship to his successor, Mr Peregrine Lavington (1960 - 1965).

The beautiful summer weather gave all the attendees the perfect opportunity to catch up over a drink and picnic food and the playing field buzzed with chatter and anecdotes from years gone by.

As always, the event was a happy occasion, enjoyed by all who came to play or spectate and to celebrate the life-long connection between the School and its Old Boys, who will always remain a valued part of its community.
