Week 1 ending Friday 14th January

Happy New Year !

I should like to welcome to the school two new members of staff. Miss Christine Eck comes to us from Chicago as replacement for Miss Maisey and therefore teach in years 2, 3 and 4 until half term. Haydon McGrath has arrived from New Zealand as replacement for our last gap year student Riley Elliott.

SKIING 2006
We have just returned from another excellent ski trip to Serre Chevalier in the Hautes Alpes region of France. This year we took a party of 27, which included many parents. There will be another trip to the same resort next year. If you would like your son to join the trip, please fill in the form below and return it to me with a cheque for £100 as a first deposit. The total cost of the trip will be about £650 payable in instalments throughout the year.

I would like my son(s) ………………………………………..to go on the trip to Serre Chevalier in 2006 (2-9 January). I enclose a cheque for £100 per person.

Tsunami Appeal

After the tragic events in Asia over the Christmas holiday we are having a non -uniform day on Thursday 20th January. Clothing should be clean and tidy and not outlandish and designed to shock. All boys who come in ‘home clothes ‘ should bring in a minimum donation of £1 to go to the appeal. I am also planning a sponsored swim for the junior part of the school ( years 3, 4 and 5) which will take place before half term.

PW

Mrs Handa organised a New Year’s party for Pre-Prep and Dr Close reports that it was a great success with everyone helping out with the thirty three children! £81.00 for raised for the Tsunami Appeal, which was a fantastic effort and many thanks are sent to Mrs Handa.

Various items from the Mrs Mynheer, Chairman of the CCCSPA

Punch Party
A big thank you to all those parents, friends, and children, who turned up to support the end of term Punch Party and make it the success that it was. The general feeling was that using the school as a venue was preferable to the Newman Rooms and made for a more festive atmosphere. Thank you to all those who helped in the planning of the event, the preparation on the day and the clearing up - a great team effort. We are pleased to be able to confirm a profit of £1410.28, which includes £150 from the sale of the Hamper that raised the highest sum. The £150 will be donated to the school's charity of choice for 2004/2005 - the new children's hospital. The hampers were splendid and raised £934! Thank you to all the Form Reps for their excellent work in coordinating their Form's efforts. If anyone has any suggestion that would make the event a greater success next year - do let any member of the committee know.

Beetle Drive and Quiz Night
A note for your diaries - the family Beetle Drive and Quiz night will take place on Saturday 5th February in the William Walton Hall. Details and ticket forms will be sent out with next week's newsletter. We do hope that as many of you as possible will be able to join us for this fun event.

CCCSPA Committee Meeting
I would like to remind all Committee members that the next meeting will take place on Wednesday 19th January at 8pm in the Walton Hall.

Medicine Form
You will find enclosed a green letter/form which is self explanatory. However, when you do find you need to send it, you should get a replacement from Matron. It is very important that you send this form in. FC

From the Newsletter of 17th December
University of Oxford Oxford Vaccine Group
‘Main school parents will find a leaflet and form from this group in their end of term envelope. Do please return the form to them if you are prepared for your son to have a throat swab taken. The team will arrange with me next term for a convenient day for them to come in if we have enough boys offering to take part.’

I have had a telephone call from the Group and they have only had six replies: are there any more families interested in joining in? If so, please send back the form or, if you have lost it, I can arrange for another one to be sent, if you contact me at the School Office. FC

Pre Prep Matters from Mrs Allen

Welcome!
Welcome to Miss Christine Eck who is Miss Maisey’s exchange for this first half of term. Miss Eck arrived in England last Thursday and has already made herself at home. Many of the Form 3 and 4 parents had the opportunity to meet her on Monday evening and she will be pleased to meet anyone who wasn’t able to come to the gathering, during the next week or so: do make yourselves known!

Ofsted Early Years Inspection
Following the two day inspection of the Nursery and Reception classes, we have now received the inspection report. I am delighted to say that it is as good as was promised and I urge you all to take a few minutes to read it. It will shortly, we are told, be on the Ofsted website (details to follow when it appears). Alternatively, you may call into the office where Mrs Carnan has some copies available for you to read.
Well done to all the staff and thank you all for your positive responses to the parental questionnaire.

Sports Matters

Please could the parents of all boys from Form 3 to 8 ensure that their son has shin pads and a gum shield for soccer this term.

1st XI versus Josca’s Result 2-7 Victory to Josca’s
This is was the first match of a hectic season for the 1st XI and with little time to prepare CCCS were always going to found it difficult against a traditionally strong Josca’s team. The first ten minutes of the game were extremely tight with both sides trying to string a series of passes together and neither side allowing each other any time or space. Josca’s broke the deadlock with a good ‘passing goal’. CCCS didn’t lose heart and immediately went close at the other end. Unfortunately a series of mistakes allowed Josca’s to start to run away with the match and the score at half time was 5 – 0. Second half was a completely different story and CCCS started brightly, playing some very good football. Some superb goal-keeping from GK and tireless work from BS kept Josca’s out. Although it did not affect the end result, CCCS won the second half 2-1.
Man of the Match: GK DJH

Colts v Josca’s away
The first match of the season revealed some basic weaknesses in passing skills and movement off the ball. In the first half CCCS played into the sun and the wind! Conceding 3 early goals knocked the confidence of the back four from which they never really recovered. At half time the boys were relieved at the prospect of having the elements in their favour for the next thirty minutes.
The second half proved a very different affair. WS and MA proved quite a handful for the Josca’s defence and CCCS threatened more regularly in the box and around the ‘D’. The more the match progressed the more the boys confidence grew. Although they conceded a few more goals, the mid-field gained much more control and showed signs of improving organisation – something upon which to build for the next match. It was heartening that the boys did not give up in view of the fact that they lost quite heavily. RM

Robin Hood Rehearsals etc from Mr Morton

As usual rehearsals will take place EVERY Monday after school. Boys playing named principal parts will be required to stay until 1800 this term. There is much work to be done to ensure the production is a success; it is essential that we have a full attendance for every rehearsal.
We are looking for some enthusiastic girls to join us for the production. The rôles of Maid Marion and her servant are the important ones to fill but it would be lovely to have a few more females to enhance our village scenes! The songs are very catchy and the rehearsal should be great fun. Our Maid Marion ought to be aged between 11 and 15 (say) but younger girls could join us otherwise. If your son has a sister/cousin/friend who would be interested please contact Mr Morton in school who will then arrange for an audition.
Finally we are looking for camouflage netting (lots of it) to create a forest canopy. If anybody has any ideas/access to any please let Mr Morton know. Thank you!
